these years o f the m useum history were described by A . F. Kots in
the fo llo w in g m anner: "P a ck a ge s with the birds o f paradise an d other f o r ­
eign wonders arrived to the courses, ordered by their underfed masters,
sp e n d in g their last m on e y". For these people, the su cce ss did not co n sist in
the m aterial w ell-being or satiety; the p a ssio n f o r creation an d creative
work raised them to the top o f the happiness.
By 1 9 1 3 their collection num bered several th ou san d exhibits an d was valued
at the sign ifican t sum o f 15 ООО rubles. A le ksan d r decided that such unique
collection can not belong to a one person and gave it to the MHFC, specify­
ing in the gift certificate that he sh o u ld be the life head o f the museum .
Even in the severe y e a rs o f the October revolution an d Civil war, f u ll o f the
terror, starvation, cold, a n d other perturbations, the em ployees o f the m u se­
um did not interrupt their work. W orking in the n o n -h e a tin g rooms, they
created sculptures, pictures, an d stuffed an im a ls and perform s scientific
studies.
In spite o f the laborious work, included the sto ckp ilin g an d registration o f
collections, an d the endless cares f o r the construction o f a new m useum
building, A le ksa n d r Fedorovich was able to f in d time f o r a scien tific work.
He is an au th or o f more than two hundred b ooks a n d articles, which are now
the classics o f the m useum science. His fie ld o f scien tific activity included
the developm ent o f exposition an d lecture m ethods f o r the popularization
o f the theory o f evolution.
However, he was more than the theorist. For all years o f the work in the
museum , ab ou t h a lf a m illion visitors were acqu ain ted by A . F. Kots with the
m useum exposition. His brilliant talent o f lecturer did not allow visitors to
remain indifferent.
One can tell ab ou t the fa te o f the m useum an d his fo u n d e r f o r a lo n g time.
However, the best characteristics o f A . F. Kots is his own phrase: "The sam e

нако лучше всего Котса характеризуют его же слова: «Та самая настой­
чивость, которая когда-то заставляла меня мальчиком добровольно го­
лодать, тратя данные на завтрак деньги на покупку мертвых птичек и
зоологических картинок, - та же самая настойчивость и упорство двига­
ли мною полвека, побуждая день за днем и год за годом собирать накап­
ливать десятки, сотни, тысячи научных экспонатов для музея...» Своим
энтузиазмом директор заражал и сотрудников. Творчество объединяло
всех. Коллекции росли, со временем экспозиционные залы музея стали на­
поминать переполненные фондохранилища. Однако ждать новых стен му­
зею пришлось очень долго. История строительства была длительной и
драматической. Несмотря на все старания, Александру Котсу не удалось
воплотить свою мечту в жизнь. В 1964 году его не стало, но начатое де­
ло продолжила Вера Николаевна Игнатьева, добившаяся начала строи­
тельства нового здания. В 1986 году нелегкую эстафету строительства
приняла Светлана Алексеевна Кулешева. Достойно завершить многолет­
ний титанический труд и открыть в 1995 году в новых стенах музея экс­
позицию было суждено Анне Иосифовне Клюкиной. Благодаря ее неустан­
ным заботам и работе коллектива в год 100-летнего юбилея было завер­
шено еще одно большое строительство и начато освоение нового фондо­
хранилища и выставочного комплекса Дарвиновского музея.

Александр Федорович Котc прожил нелегкую, полную лишений и невз­
год, но прекрасную жизнь. Ему посчастливилось застать свое детище
признанным и любимым, с дружным коллективом, работающим в напра­
влении, которое когда-то определил он сам. А. Ф. Котc завещал нам,
своим потомкам, очень многое: свой музей, свое научное наследие, свой
пример противостояния хаосу, свой мальчишеский пыл и опыт патри­
арха. Жизнь, к счастью, иногда дарит нам незаменимых людей.

tures, - the sam e persistence an d perseverance drove me f o r h a lf a century,
in d u cin g me to collect a n d accum ulate scores, hundreds a n d th o u san d s o f
m useum exhibits, - day after day, y e a r after y e a r.. . " The enthusiasm o f the
director aroused the enthusiasm o f his employees. The creation united all o f
them. Collections grew constantly, an d soon m useum halls looked like the
overflowed depositories. However, the w aiting f o r new b u ild in g was very
long. The history o f its construction was long an d dramatic.

Despite all

efforts, A le ksa n d r Kots fa ile d to realize his dream. He died in 1964, but his
life-work was con tin ue d by Vera N iko lae vn a Ign at'e va, who achieved a s u c ­
cess in the b e g in n in g o f the construction o f the new building.

Svetlana A lekseevna Kuleshova took the baton o f this hard process. The
h o n o r to com plete the long-term titanic work an d to open the exposition in
a new m useum b u ild in g in 1 9 9 5 fe ll on A n n a Io sifo v n a Klyukina. Thanks to
her tireless care an d the e n th u siastic work o f the whole m useum staff, one
more construction h as been com pleted to the centenary o f the m useum and
the work began in the new stock depository an d the exhibition center o f the
Darw in m useum .
The life o f A le ksa n d r Kots was uneasy, fu ll o f asperity and hardship, but, at
the sam e time, it was wonderful. He was lu cky to see his m useum is recog­
nized and p o p u lar an d h a s a wonderful an d united stuff, w orking in the
direction, being once determ ined by him. A . F. Kots bequeath to us, his p rog­
eny, his museum, his scien tific heritage, his exam ple o f the confrontation
with chaos, his puerile ardour an d the experience o f the patriarch.
Fortunately, our life som etim es bestows such unique people on us.
